1. WILLAM (1) TOWNE , b, in England in 1600, and believed to be the son of
Richard Towne, of Braceby, England, came from either Yarmouth or Bristol, England, with his wife Joanna (Blessing) Towne and five or six children. They took up their residence in Salem. Their children:

2 EDMUND (2) TOWNE (William 1), bapt. June 28, 1628. m. Mary, dau of Thomas Browning, who was bapt. January 7, 1638. He was one of a committee from the town of Topsfield who in 1675 (during King Philip’s War) presented a petition to the General Court for leave to form military companies to protect the people from the Indians while at their work. He d. before May 3, 1678. The will of his widow was proved December 16, 1717. The songs Thomas 3 and William 3 were appointed administrators. Their children:

5 THOMAS (3) TOWNE (Edmund (2), William (1)), b. at Topsfield in 1655. m. Sarah French, March 17, 1685. He was in Captain Lothrop’s Company at Hatfield, August 12, 1675, and was one of the very few of that company of eighty-eight men who escaped from the fatal encounter with the Indians on the memorable eighteenth of September following at Bloody Brook. He was at this time about twenty years of age, and the historian of the period says:”The company was made up of young men, the flower of Essex County, who were not afraid to speak to the enemy within the gate.”* He d. in 1720, aged sixty-five years. March 11, 1741(*) In this connection I quote the words of E.H. in the “Towne Memorial”: “ It is believed that very few of the present generation have any adequate idea of the terrible nature of the struggles that our ancestors were engaged in at this time, for their very existence, as well as for their homes, with all that the word home implies. There can be no doubt that it was the most severe and bloddy war that this country was ever engagedin, taking into consideration the destruction of life and property in proportion to what was exposed to its ravages. Although it lasted but about one year, yet more than six hundred men, women, and children feel victims to the bullet, tomahawk, and scalping knife of the savage foe. More than eighteen towns and villages were either entirely or partially destryed and abandoned. More than six hundred families were burned out, and to great was the suffering and destitution that subscriptions were taken up in many places for their relief. Very few of those in this country, who have, not many years since, so nobly and generously contributed to the relief of the suffering in Ireland, knew that they were repaying an obligation more than tow hundred years old. Yet it is a matter of history that on the seventh of August, 1676, a vessel sailed from Dublin, Ireland, laden with provisions to the amount of several thousand dollars, for the relief of the destitute in the colonies of Massachusetts. Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Verily the word of the Lord is true and sure: “Cast they bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it agin after many days.”

9 JOHN (3) TOWNE (Jacob (2, William 1), b. at Topsfield, April 2, 1658, m. Mary Smith, February 2, 1680. He was the first of the Towne families who spelled their name without the “e”. He was a very efficient man in town affairs in Topsfield. When the town of Framingham was incorporated, at their first town meeting he was elected selectman, and often afterward head the same office. In 1712 he removed to Oxford, where at the first town meeting there he was elected town clerk and selectman, July 22, 1713. He was one of four persons who first met to consider the formation of a church, and at its organization was chosen deacon, which office he held to the close of his life, when his son Jonathan succeeded him. John d. in 1740, aged eighty-two. Their children:

**Jacob (8) born October 20, 1755 and son of Jacob and Mary Campbell above, of Oxford, was a person of the personal appearance and attainments. He had a passion for a military life, and when the reports of Napoleon’s brilliant victories in his campaign in Italy reached this country, he left with the intention of joining him, declaring it to be the highest ambition of his life to serve under such a “gallant chieftain,” since which time he has never been heard of.
72 JOHN (5) TOWNE (Jonathan 4, John 3, Jacob 2, William 1), b. at Oxford, December 15, 1728, m. Dorothy Pratt, April 9, 1761, and removed to Otsego County, N. Y., in 1797. He was captain of a company of Oxford minutemen during the Revolution, and marched at their Lead to the Battle of Lexington. He was very efficient as a recruiting officer, and raised large sums of money to secure soldiers. No date of his death. Their children:

His son William also fought at the surrend of Burgoyne at Fishkill, and at the battle of the Cowpens, S. C. Their children:

Major-Gen. Salem Towne was a very prominent man in his day. When the news of the Battle of Lexington came, he was among the first to respond to his country’s call. The morning of the twentieth of April, 1775, found his company on its way to Boston. Patriots were everywhere. The people only waited for sufficient cause for breaking away from the mother country. “The British had fired the first gun.” He was soon quartermaster of his regiment. This office required ability, energy, and foresight. He was a major-general of militia, a members of the Constitutional Convention of 1780, a representative of his town, and was always guarding and upholding the interests of his town and State. 347 GENERAL SALEM (7) TOWNE (Salem 6, Jacob 5, Jonathan 4, John 3, Jacob 2, William 1) b. at Oxford, March 26, 1780,
m. Sarah, dau. of Gen. John Spurr in 1804. He d. February 17,
1872, at Charlton, where their children all born. He was b. in the darkest days of the Revolution. He early learned to love his country, which made him the useful and helpful citizen that he was. He became prominent and a leader in the affairs of his town and in the councils of the State. He inherited his father’s native ability. He also became a major-general of State militia and helped to keep alive the martial spirit which laid the foundation of our country.
