I have been volunteering at a local elementary school for their Robotics Club. They build and drive robots from Vex IQ, a combination of lego-like pieces and motors, gears, tractor tracks. Recently we went to a competition of 30 teams, at least 6 schools, most were middle schools, but our students from 3rd,4th and 5th grade. Our class wore blue.
Our fearless leader (the teacher)
The competition is run on a field with blocks, catch baskets and obstacles.
And our kids having fun competing. They did pretty well. 2 teams of 2 students from different schools worked together to score points moving block around by remote control. Each student drives for 1/2 of the 60 second time limit.
Another trial is for pre-programming of the robot to run the course and score points.
Always some last minute tweaks, but the coaches (teacher) and advisors can only kibitz.
Some of the middle school robots were quite elaborate.
